Making Premium Wood Fuel Pellets From 1982
Softwood is known for burning hotter than hardwood but also burns more quickly. The pelleting process takes away many of the differences between hardwood and softwood. The main remaining difference will be that softwood pellets have a slightly higher BTU than hardwood.
The critical factors in heating pellets are not so much hardwood or softwood but rather the ash %, moisture, pellet density, and pellet length.
Due to the higher BTUs in softwood, you may have to adjust the airflow and/or pellet feed rate on your pellet stove. Please contact your pellet stove manufacturer for more specific details.
